The International Society of Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE), the International Society of Exposure Sciences (ISES), and the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ) held a joint annual meeting in August 2013 in Basel Switzerland. The conference, “Environment and Health—Bridging South, North, East and West” (http://www.ehbasel13.org/) had more than 1700 participants from more than 70 countries. Seven SAHSU staff attended and between then presented three talks on air pollution and socioeconomic characteristics, urban form and mortality rates and NO2 and PM10 models for Europe. There were eight posters related to SAHSU studies presented including work on air pollution, green spaces, incinerators and noise exposure. In addition SAHSU staff chaired four sessions on a wide range of topics including drinking water, Health related quality of life and making sense of exposures and health effects.
The Environmental Exposure Group at SAHSU together with the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute lead a very successful conference workshop on environmental exposure modelling. Thirty-two participants from 18 counties attended the 1-day course to learn about the newest developments in spatial environmental models and exposure assessment techniques. Apart from lectures and demonstrations, participants also had a chance to familiarise themselves with the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and apply some of the learned techniques.
The Environmental Exposure Group will be running similar courses on the use of GIS in public health and more specifically in exposure modelling and assessment in the future. Please join our mailing list here if you would like to get more information about upcoming courses
